BYU 76, Seton Hall 74

Sunday, December 31:

SOUTH FLORIDA 80, Bethune-Cookman 58
RUTGERS 75, South Carolina State 56

Quote to Note: I'm going with Rick Pitino again for the third straight week, this time his comments on sending freshman Derrick Caracter home for a break: "I didn’t realize he had as many obstacles to overcome. It may be better for him to get a strength coach, train his tail off and make the NBA."

In other words, Rick has decided there's absolutely nothing he can do to help this kid. Great coaching!

Best win:

DePaul 90, California 62- DePaul is hitting their stride just in time for Big East season. The Blue Demons started slow but this 28 point win over a solid Cal team was important for confidence and their NCAA Tournament resume.

Worst loss:

Texas A&M-Corpus Christie 69, South Florida 63- This is just brutal. No Big East team should be losing to a team like that no matter where the game is played (it was in Las Vegas). The Bulls better hope what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

National games to watch:

December 27-

Bradley @ Northern Iowa: The MVC opener features two teams that figure to be on the bubble come Selection Sunday. A big early conference game that will be a resume builder for one and a costly loss for the other.

December 28-

Georgia @ Clemson: Two upstarts will meet here and Clemson will finally have a chance to validate its ranking. Georgia is not the best team out there, but they are the best that Clemson has played by far. The Bulldogs are looking for a quality non-conference road win to add to their impressive victory over Gonzaga earlier this month.

Washington State @ UCLA: WSU has played very well this season, but now comes conference play. Will they open with a bang and keep the game competitive or get blown out by the best team in the nation?

December 29-

Providence @ Florida State: It's still early, the this game has bubble written all over it. Both teams will most certainly have issues on Selection Sunday, and they need this win for their respective resumes. It may come down to Providence and Florida State for the last spot in the NCAA Tournament.

December 30-

Georgetown @ Michigan: The Hoyas haven't played all that well in the non-conference, and this is a chance to get a decent road win. For Michigan, this is their third chance to beat a major conference team. They are 0-2 so far, and 0-3 looks likely.

December 31-

Wisconsin @ Georgia: This New Year's Eve tilt features the best player in the country, Alando Tucker, trying to help his team come up with a big non-conference road win. As noted above, Georgia has played well early on this season and this would be a great win for them to go along with the Gonzaga win and the possible win at Clemson.

Quote to Note: Louisville coach Rick Pitino makes his 2nd appearance here in as many weeks: "We've got to learn how to make easy shots, the little bank shots, the two-point shots."

Ummm, don't players learn that in middle school, Rick?

Weekly Big East Awards: (Awarded by the conference with their quotes)

Big East Player of the Week:

Demetris Nichols, Syracuse. "Nichols matched his career scoring high with a 28-point effort in a 94-71 win over Baylor. It was the Orange's only game of the week. Nichols shot 12-of-18 from the floor, which included 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The native of Boston, Mass. also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Nichols is on the highest scoring stretch of his career, averaging 27.3 points over his last three games. For the season, he is second in the Big East in scoring (18.5)."

Big East Rookie of the Week:

Jerome Dyson, Connecticut. "Dyson collected a game-high 19 points while leading Connecticut to an 89-73 win over St. Mary's (Calif.). A native of Rockville, Md., he also grabbed five rebounds and made two steals. For the season, Dyson leads the undefeated Huskies in scoring (14.2) and steals (2.1). He has started every game."

Big East Weekly Honor Roll:

John Williamson, Cincinnati. Averaged 17.5 pts., 12.0 rebs. in a 1-1 week.

Sammy Mejia, DePaul. Averaged 22.5 pts., 8.0 rebs. and 4.0 assists in wins over Wake Forest and Rhode Island. Shot 59.2 percent from the floor.

Rob Kurz, Notre Dame. Posted 16 pts., 12 rebs., 7 assists and 4 blocks in victory over Elon.

Kentrell Gransberry, USF. In his Bulls' debut, recorded 24 pts., and 11 rebs. in 23 minutes in a win over Norfolk State.

Joe Alexander, West Virginia. Had 18 pts., 6 rebs. and 4 assists in win over Savannah State.

Best win:

Cincinnati 67, Xavier 57- The Bearcats earned a quality win against their cross-town rivals, only to be followed up by a stinker against Ohio State on Saturday.

Worst loss:

UMass 72, Louisville 68- Yes, UMass is a good team again. However, Louisville has to win that game at Freedom Hall. Louisville can't shoot the ball right now, and that was never more evident than in their loss to Kentucky on Saturday. This loss to UMass may be the beginning of a tough time in Pitino country.

National games to watch:

December 18-

Oklahoma State @ Tennessee: The Cowboys put their undefeated season on the line at Bruce Pearl's place in the first of two tough games for them this week. Chris Lofton has been lights out so far, and he'll be key if the Vols want to pull off the upset.

December 19-

Illinois @ Missouri- The Braggin' Rights Game features an improved Missouri team led by Mike Anderson against an Illinois team still trying to find its way after losing Dee Brown and James Augustine to graduation. Upset city?

December 20-

Memphis @ Arizona- Two high octane offenses will be going up against one another in this game. Nobody really knows if Memphis is for real yet. This would be a good opportunity to get some press.

LSU @ Washington- LSU continues its northwest swing after escaping Corvallis with a win on Sunday night. John Brady's club needs to be more consistent, as they have lost to Texas and Wichita State early on this season. Washington needs this game to get back on track after getting blown out by Gonzaga last week.

December 21-

Pittsburgh @ Oklahoma State- Pittsburgh's second true road game (seems like an eternity since they played two in a row on the road) takes them to "neutral site" Oklahoma City. Sean Sutton's club has played very well on the young season, and I suspect Pitt may be headed for two straight losses after getting thrashed at Wisconsin on Saturday.

Duke vs. Gonzaga- Call it Redick vs. Morrison one year too late. Madison Square Garden will be buzzing with two of the top programs in the nation meeting in the nightcap of a double header. Mark Few's team has been inconsistent, beating Washington by 20 but then losing at Georgia last weekend. This should be a dandy.

December 22-

Georgia @ Georgia Tech- Are the aforementioned Bulldogs for real? A win in Atlanta will go a long way towards proving that.

December 23-

Texas @ Tennessee- A nice matchup of pretty even teams in my estimation. Texas is very young but has a great group of players. Tennessee will be coming off a big game vs. Oklahoma State on Monday.

Boston College @ Kansas- The Eagles have been playing extremely well ever since shot blocker extraordinaire Sean Williams returned. Kansas has been so up and down so far, nobody knows what to make of them. I expect this one to be close with BC having a great shot to pull off the upset in the end.

Ohio State @ Florida- This could be the game of the year, as two legit national title contenders go at it. Joakim Noah vs. Greg Oden? That's just the beginning. This game has the potential to be a classic.

Quote to Note: Louisville coach Rick Pitino after a loss to Arizona on Tuesday night: "I am really happy with my guys, I see great potential in this basketball team and if we continue to grow we are going to be an outstanding basketball team. I am not happy with the loss, but I am happy with our potential."

What exactly does that mean? Someone?? Anyone???

Weekly Big East awards: (straight from the Big East website)

Big East Player of the Week:

Russell Carter, Notre Dame. “Carter posted a career-high 27 points in the Irish's 99-85 win over No. 4/5 Alabama. He was 6-of-11 from 3-point range, grabbed five rebounds and made five steals. It was Notre Dame's only game of the week. Carter, a native of Paulsboro, N.J., is averaging a team-leading 16.6 points and has reached double figures in every game this season.”

Big East Rookie of the Week:

Eugene Harvey, Seton Hall. “Harvey earns rookie honors for the second straight week. In a 69-59 come-from-behind win over Penn State, he scored a career-high 27 points on 10-18 shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds and dealt four assists. Earlier in the week, he had 14 points in an 83-49 victory over Monmouth."

Big East Weekly Honor Roll:

Kyle McAlarney, Notre Dame. Scored 20 pts. on 7-of-9 shooting in win over Alabama.

Aaron Gray, Pittsburgh. Averaged 17.5 pts., 11.5 rebs., and shot 53.8 percent from the floor in a 2-0 week. Had two double-doubles.

McHugh Mattis, USF. Averaged 17.3 pts., 11.3 rebs., 5.0 blocks in a 2-1 week. Had a triple-double in a win at Winston-Salem.

Demetris Nichols, Syracuse. Averaged 27.0 pts., shot 62.5 percent from the floor in a 1-1 week.

Alex Ruoff, West Virginia. Averaged 16.5 pts., 5.0 assists and shot 73.3 percent from 3-point range in a 2-0 week, which included a victory over NC State.

Best win:

Notre Dame 99, Alabama 85- Notre Dame needed this one for their NCAA hopes, and a non-conference win versus a top five team will certainly do the trick. Russell Carter and the three pointer happy Irish need to keep their hot shooting up, or they will struggle in Big East play.

Worst loss:

Drexel 81, Villanova 76- The loss of Randy Foye, as well as Allan Ray, is showing for Villanova. Curtis Sumpter is doing all he can (31 pts, 10 rebs), but Will Sheridan and Dante Cunningham need to step it up.

National games to watch: Light schedule this week with most schools administering final exams, but here are two games coming up this Saturday.

December 16-

Pittsburgh @ Wisconsin: In this matchup of heavy weights, Wisconsin’s home dominance may come into question in this game. Pitt is very balanced. Don’t let the three point win at Buffalo fool you.

Purdue @ Butler: This would be a quality win for Matt Painter and his boilermakers. Purdue has played a tough schedule thus far, but lacks a marquee win. Butler, coming off a loss to Indiana State, needs this one to get back on track.

Reflections on the young season

Roughly a month into the 2006-2007 college basketball season, there is one glaring, obvious theme: Parity.

Butler wins the preseason NIT over Gonzaga and North Carolina? Notre Dame, after losing to Butler, beats Maryland and Alabama? (Without Chris Quinn and Torin Francis) Virginia beats Arizona, while Arizona proceeds to steamroll every other team in its path? Those are just a few examples of what has happened in this unpredictable month of basketball.

Least we forget Oral Roberts winning at Kansas, North Dakota State winning at Marquette, and Vermont rolling over Boston College. Fluke wins, yes. However, it shows that any team in the NCAA can win on any night. Rankings can essentially be thrown out the window and destroyed like George Bush's presidency.

From what we've seen so far, March is going to be a strange, strange month. Who will win the national championship? Right now, I don't have a clue. Put a gun to my head and I'll say UCLA. Just don't count on me being around in the spring. The NCAA Tournament, while still three months away, can't come soon enough. What a wild ride it will be. If only college football could learn.......

Looking around the NCAA, some teams stand out for a variety of reasons:

Clemson: With a schedule that would make Jim Boeheim blush, the Tigers are off to a 10-0 start. Yes, they have played Minnesota, South Carolina, and Mississippi State, but those teams are at the bottom of their respective conferences. Still, they've taken care of business and deserve credit for that. The real test will come as ACC play begins. Games @ Florida State and vs. Georgia Tech will show us where Clemson is really at.

Boston College: After two brutal losses to Vermont and Providence, the Eagles have hit their stride. Five straight wins, culminating in tonight's dismantling of Maryland, have given Al Skinner's club it's confidence back. Think the return of Sean Williams helps? The "swatta" as a person who posts here likes to call him, has recorded 36 blocks in six games since returning from suspension. Result? BC is 5-1 in those games. A December 23 game at Kansas awaits, and I think BC has an excellent chance to win this game over an inconsistent and hard to figure out Kansas team.

Notre Dame: Defeating Alabama and Maryland might be just what Mike Brey needs. Long been rumored to be on the hot seat, Brey has turned his team into a Big East sleeper. Only a two point loss to Butler keeps the Irish from being undefeated. As much as it pains me to say this, Notre Dame just might make the NCAA Tournament. Much basketball remains though, and I'm hopeful that I'll be wrong.

Kansas: Who knows what to make of this team? They're 8-2 which isn't bad, but who loses at home to Oral Roberts and then beats Florida, only to follow that up with a loss to DePaul? Darrell Arthur is certainly a stud for KU, but Sasha Kaun is a question mark in my opinion, only averaging 3.7 points per game so far this season. They need to get more production out of him in order to make a run in the NCAA Tournament.

Wichita State: Wow. Perhaps the team with the best resume so far, the Shockers aren't shocking anyone anymore, especially after their run to the Sweet 16 last season. They've started 06-07 off on the right foot, knocking off LSU, Syracuse, George Mason, and Wyoming, all on the road. This team is an elite team and could make a serious run at the final four. Right now, they're sitting atop the college basketball world with a cool RPI of 2. On December 22, they travel to the Pit in New Mexico. A win there will really cement their status as a program to be reckoned with.

My pick for the best team in Kansas? I think you can tell.
